COMMONWEALTH Games athletes from the sun-drenched South Pacific island of Vanuatu experienced snow for the first time yesterday.

After competing in judo and table tennis, the 11 members of the team were desperate to go sledging when they heard about Scotland’s indoor snow mountain, Snow Factor at Braehead, near Glasgow.

Although none of Vanuatu’s athletes won a medal at the Games, three of the team made up for that by winning a sledging race on snow slopes.

Vanuatu makes it through table tennis round one in Glasgow

The table tennis is underway in Glasgow, with Pacific nations holding their own in the team rounds.

Adelene Lulu is part of Vanuatu's table tennis team, facing off against some of the world's best including Singapore and Malaysia.

It is the first Commonwealth Games for many on the team, and Adelene says the competition has been a challenge.


Vanuatu sends smaller team to Glasgow Games

Vanuatu will send a smaller team of 12 athletes to this month's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The Melanesian nation sent 14 competitors to the Delhi Games four years ago, across three sports, but the country's Chef De Mission, Henry Tavoa, says they were forced to make a late change.

"The last time we had athletics. We had to remove athletics from our team, just administrative stuff - we could have had a bigger team - and now it's just table tennis and judo".

Henry Tavoa says three of their athletes competed at the London Olympics two years ago and they're hopeful some of them can at least make it to the second round of competition in Glasgow.

Vanuatu to strengthen transparency law

Vanuatu's prime minister says he wants to strengthen the Ombudsman's Act so that the government maintains transparency, accountability and responsibility.

Joe Natuman says the government he leads is committed to the principle of transparency.

The prime minister also says his government will ensure the Leadership Code Act is respected by all.

While the prime minister has not accused anyone of wrongdoing, our correspondent says he has sent a clear message to ministers and senior public servants to make sure they operate within the law.
