Solomon Islands National Tourism Forum receives major backing

HONIARA, Solomon Islands – As part of an agreement with the Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau (SIVB) and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Our Telekom announced major backing for the Solomon Islands National Tourism Forum (NTF) scheduled in Honiara on August 29. Our Telekom will have exclusive naming rights for the event, the first of its kind ever to take place in the Solomon Islands.

Presenting a check for SLD100,000 to the NTF Organizing Committee in Honiara yesterday, Our Telekom CEO, Loyley Ngira said he was delighted to be supporting such an important event.

“As the Solomon Islands largest mobile communications network Our Telekom is very excited to announce its commitment as a principal sponsor of the NTF,” Mr. Ngira said.

“We are aware of how communications have become an integral part of local tourism in this day and age.

St Barbara allowed back to Solomon Islands Gold Ridge mine

The Solomon Islands government has lifted an immigration ban, allowing St Barbara to send in company staff to enable a site assessment and works to repair flood damage caused at the Gold Ridge mine earlier this year.

St Barbara employees who worked at the Gold Ridge mine were banned from re-entering the country, three weeks after heavy rain and catastrophic flash flooding forced the evacuation of the mine.

Senior executives from the Company recently participated in a cultural reconciliation process with the Solomon Islands Prime Minister.

In April the Prime Minister’s special secretary Dr Phil Tagini went on the record to indicate that the general community and the Solomon Islands government were unsatisfied with the way personnel had left the mine without informing the relevant departments.

The flooding killed at least 23 people, displaced thousands more, and destroyed many gardens, causing a severe food shortage.

The Rev Ivica Gregurec, a priest assistant in the Dunedin North Anglican Parish, said the Dunedin Solomon Islands community was organising the collection of summer clothing, bedding, blankets and dry and non-perishable food, including rice, salt and sugar, to be directly distributed to the affected communities.

World Bank signs major aid projects in Solomon Islands

The World Bank and the Solomon Islands government signed agreements today to improve electricity supply in Honiara and protect communities from climate change and natural disasters.

The Finance Minister, Rick Houenipwela, and the Bank's Pacific country director, Franz Drees-Gross, signed the deals worth more than 22 million US dollars.

The Community Resilience to Climate Change and Disaster Risk in Solomon Islands Project allocates just over 9 million US dollars for climate and disaster risk information and early warning systems.

13 million US dollars is being made available for the Sustainable Energy Project, which is working to improve the reliability and efficiency of electricity supply for the 65,000 residents of Honiara.

Improved tourism data collection vital to determining economic direction

he Solomon Island Visitors Bureau (SIVB) CEO, Josefa ‘Jo’ Tuamoto has echoed his South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) counterpart’s comments underlining the role data and statistics can play in determining a country’s economic direction.

Returning to Honiara this week after chairing the SPTO-convened ‘Pacific Conference on Measuring Tourism’ in Fiji, Mr Tuamoto said the organisation’s CEO, Ilisoni Vuidreketi was “spot on” with his comments.
