Looking Toward Green Future, St Lucia Hosts Energy Forum

Earlier this year, St Lucia Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony announced a push for the country to generate 35 percent of its annual energy needs from green energy by 2020.

To move forward on that front, St Lucia is holding an Energy Donors Conference featuring donors from within the region and abroad that begins Tuesday.

“We have support coming from many different places, so we felt it was important to bring these partners together so we can create a roadmap, and address in a more structured way our path towards achieving this 35 percent renewable energy by 2020,” said Sylvester Clauzel, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology.

Clauzel said the goal was to “find ways to optimize the assistance received from donor agencies, and to identify financial, technical and capacity building support available for the renewable energy plan.”

St Lucia Eyes Geothermal Energy

Following the lead of some of its Eastern Caribbean neighbours, St Lucia’s government says it is exploring the development of geothermal energy on the island.

As islands like Dominica, Nevis and Montserrat explore geothermal (albeit at varying stages of development), St Lucia says it is moving “very aggressively moving towards developing this geothermal resource,” according to Minister for Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology, Dr James Fletcher.

Any potential geothermal project would be located at the island’s Sulphur Springs, Fletcher said.

St Lucia to develop geothermal energy sector

imageThe St Lucia government says it will explore the development of the island’s geothermal resources at the Sulphur Springs in the west coast town of Soufriere.

“The government of St Lucia is very aggressively moving towards developing this geothermal resource for many reasons; we believe it gives us an excellent opportunity to bring down the price of electricity, secondly it gives us some buffer in volatility in world oil prices.

“And the more we can move our dependence away from oil and diesel, then the better for us,” said Dr James Fletcher, the Minister for Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology.

He said the Kenny Anthony administration has been in discussions with a developer, but before the geothermal resource can be operationalised, it was necessary to equate a value to it.
