Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa…Africa at the dawn of the digital currency revolution

15 African countries are preparing, developing or deploying e-currencies under the watchful eye of banks, telecom operators and fintech. For many months, Nigeria’s Central Bank governor Godwin Emefiele was impatient. In Lagos and Abuja, his attempt to fast-track the renewal of naira notes was met with the wrath of the judiciary, banks and politicians.
Nigerias accelerating inflation puts the skids on plans to end fuel subsidy

The upward march of Nigerian inflation means that scrapping the fuel subsidy in one go is unlikely to be viable, economists say. The country in April secured an $800m loan from the World Bank to cushion the end of the universal support. The government of outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari has committed to ending the subsidy before handing over power in May, while president-elect Bola Tinubu has said he will scrap the payments.
NIGERIAN TEENAGERS WHO BECAME SCI-FI SENSATIONS

Nine teenage boys in the Nigerian city of Kaduna started experimenting with making sci-fi films in 2016. They borrowed smartphones from family members, and made tripods out of wood. Three years later, their first short film became a sensation, drawing the attention of millions of people, including Hollywood Stars. The BBC’s Damilola Oduolowu met the young film-makers in Nigeria to hear their story.
Nigeria's Twitter ban leaves some businesses in the lurch

Lagos-based entrepreneur Ogechi Egemonu was selling more than 500,000 naira ($1,219) worth of watches, shoes and handbags on Twitter per week.

Now, with the site suspended by the Nigerian government, Egemonu does not know how she will cope.

"Social media is where I eat," she told Reuters. "I depend on social media for my livelihood."

Scores of small and medium-sized businesses across Africa's most populous nation - and largest economy - are reeling from the indefinite suspension of the social media site.

Nigeria announced the suspension on June 4, days after the platform removed a post from President Muhammadu Buhari that threatened to punish regional separatists. Most telecommunications sites have since blocked access
Covid Patients Needing Oxygen Surge in Nigeria’s Commercial Hub

he number of coronavirus patients requiring oxygen to survive surged fivefold at one of the main hospitals in the Nigerian commercial hub of Lagos, as a second wave of the pandemic hits the nation’s biggest city.

Demand for oxygen increased to 350 six-liter cylinders per day from 70 cylinders at the Yaba Mainland Hospital, state Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said Tuesday in an emailed statement.

“This is projected to more than double to 750 six-cylinders before the end of January 2021,” he said.

Lagos had 41,374 confirmed cases of coronavirus as of Jan. 17. A total of 227 infected people have been admitted to isolation centers, while another 9,213 persons are receiving care at home, said Akin Abayomi, the state’s commissioner for health.
2023 Presidency: Anyone from South, not just South-East, can contest – Segun Osoba

Former governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba, has said it is the right of anyone in the Southern part of Nigeria to aspire to become the president of the country, ditching claims in some quarters that the South-East should succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

Osoba, who was a guest on ARISE News, said nobody from the South-East has approached him as a major stakeholder of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to lobby for the country’s number one position, painting a veiled picture of unseriousness on the part of South-Eastners to clinch the number one position of Nigeria.

He said: “As far as I am concerned nobody, and I say it categorically, has told me that the Igbo or the easterner wants to run for the presidency, all I read are on the pages of the newspaper.

Aliko Dangote to build huge oil refinery in Nigeria

On a peninsula east of Lagos, 30,000 workers are employed on a project that holds out the promise of transforming Nigeria’s economic fortunes. It’s here that Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, plans to spend more than his net worth of $13.5bn building one of the world’s biggest oil refineries. If he succeeds, he could end the irony of Africa’s biggest oil producer importing $7bn of fuel a year, and instead see it meeting its own needs and supplying neighbouring nations.
