Charity hero Uncle Kentang gets Commonwealth award

Kuan Chee Heng, known as Uncle Kentang by many who follow his acts of charity online, has been named to the Commonwealth Points of Light Award in recognition of his philanthropy.

The award is given out weekly to a person from the Commonwealth in recognition of their community work, and Uncle Kentang will be only the fourth Malaysian to receive the honour since its inception in 2018.

“This isn’t just for me, this is for all Malaysians,” he told FMT. “I’m just a representative, this award belongs to everyone, ‘Uncle Kentang’ isn’t just about what I do.”

He received notice of the honour on Saturday night and will collect the certificate on June 12 at the British High Commissioner’s office in Kuala Lumpur.
Bitcoin mining consumes more energy than the annual consumption of Malaysia and Sweden

According to Cambridge researchers, Bitcoin mining consumes around 0.55 percent of global electricity production and more energy than the annual consumption of Malaysia and Sweden, Highsnobiety reports.

Cryptocurrencies which include Bitcoin are gaining popularity across the world and companies like Tesla and Paypal are now accepting the digital currency as a legit payment form. But because mining these digital coins currently consumes around 110 Terawatt Hours per year, it poses a massive environmental concern.

Bitcoin “mining” is the process of earning Bitcoin through the use of computers which often results in thousands to tens of thousands of computers operating around the clock while being cooled. In an interview with CNBC, Bill Gates said that Bitcoin uses more electricity per transaction than any other method known to mankind.

Because we are just at the start of acknowledging cryptocurrency, it is not likely that energy consumption will go down in the future unless people stop investing in the coins. Michel Rauchs, a researcher at The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance told the BBC, “It is really by design that Bitcoin consumes that much electricity. This is not something that will change in the future unless the Bitcoin price is going to significantly go down.”
Malaysia Debt Ventures and Kenanga set up $73m fintech fund

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia Debt Ventures (MDV), a state-owned financier of technology and green startups in the country, and Kenanga Investment Bank on last Wednesday announced the creation of a fintech fund, with a target size of 300 million ringgit ($73 million).

The new vehicle seeks to support the growth of fintech companies and develop the venture capital industry in Malaysia. The fund will see MDV and Kenanga take up the role of joint managers and co-investors on a pro rata basis, according to a statement.

In the initial investment phase, MDV and Kenanga will each contribute 25 million ringgit as seed capital for the fund. The money will primarily be used to finance fintech companies at various stages of their life cycle, up to the pre-initial public offering.
Malaysia to buy more Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines

KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 (Reuters) - Malaysia will buy additional doses of Pfizer-BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine, bringing the total secured to 32 million, enough to cover half of its population, the country's science minister said on Monday.

The Southeast Asian country last month embarked on a nationwide vaccination programme, targeting to inoculate 80% of its 32 million people by February 2022.
Malaysia’s 4Q20 retail sales down 19.7%

KUALA LUMPUR (March 8): Malaysia’s retail sales in October to December 2020 (4Q20) contracted 19.7% from a year earlier after the second conditional movement control order (CMCO) was enforced in the Klang Valley on Oct 14, 2020, according to the latest Malaysia Retail Sales Report released by Retail Group Malaysia today.

The Klang Valley accounted for 60% of the country’s retail sales. Retail sales were further dragged down when the CMCO was later extended to include all states except Sarawak until the end of 2020, according to the report.

Traditionally, the fourth quarter is a very strong quarter for retailers due to the year-end holidays, Christmas shopping and back-to-school shopping, the report said.

“Third-wave Covid-19, restrictions on interstate travel, restrictions on inter-district travel, working from home as well as the delay in school opening led to significant reduction in shopping traffic in malls, commercial centres and food and beverage (F&B) outlets located throughout the country,” Retail Group Malaysia managing director Tan Hai Hsin said in the Malaysia Retail Sales Report.
Malaysia’s declaration of emergency keeps Muhyiddin’s window open

On Jan. 12, Malaysia was placed under a state of emergency. The stated aim of this
extraordinary measure is to tackle the surging COVID-19 pandemic, as it empowers
the government to focus on tackling the scourge unhindered.

At first blush, the reasoning is irreproachable. The day the emergency was declared,
Malaysia reported 3,309 new cases, breaking a record for the highest daily tally. The
number of new reported cases daily has on the rise since September 2020.

However, many politicians and civil society groups have argued that the emergency is
unnecessary, as the government has many measures at its disposal. The existing
powers provided under the prevailing Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases
Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia seen fully recovering in 2021

Southeast Asia's six leading economies are expected to face diverging fiscal paths in 2021, with Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia gaining from pre-pandemic levels while Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand struggle to return to health.

Nikkei compiled the International Monetary Fund's country-based projections for real gross domestic product, setting the 2019 figures as a baseline of 100. Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia all scored above the 100 mark for 2021, meaning their economies are seen expanding next year compared with the level before the coronavirus outbreak in 2019. Still, all six countries face continued uncertainties from the epidemic, as well as the new incoming administration in the U.S.

Vietnam is forecast to lead the group with a projected growth index of 108.4. S&P Global predicts the Vietnamese economy will expand 10.9% in real terms in 2021, more than any other country in the Asia-Pacific, following a 2.91% uptick this year.

Malaysia’s Health Ministry is looking into fully reopening the Malaysia-Singapore border for daily commutes, minister Adham Baba said on Friday (Sep 11). He said that the plan to reopen the border came after pressure from the public, whose livelihood had been affected by the border closures. “The extension of the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) until December is a crucial period for the ministry to determine the best time to allow the opening of the border for daily commuters,” Dr Adham told
