Sylvie Lamothe of Timmins recently spent six months supporting international development in South America through a Canadian agency called CUSO International. Lamothe is hosting what is billed to be a “spicy fundraiser” for CUSO, featuring salsa dancing, “saucy cocktails,” prizes and a silent auction. “Caliente for CUSO International” will take place at the Aura Lounge on Saturday, June 21.
TIMMINS - Sylvie Lamothe always had a dream of travelling the world.
“But I wanted to do it in a different way,” the Timmins resident explained. “I didn’t just want to be a tourist. I wanted to live within a local community ... utilizing my skills to help people and get to be part of the local culture.”
That’s what drew her to get involved with CUSO (Canadian University Service Overseas) International.
Each year, CUSO sends hundreds of volunteers to work on development projects in more than 40 countries — mostly in impoverished areas within in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
“My professional background is working in non-profits, specifically with volunteer management and fundraising,” said Lamothe, who holds a degree in business administration.
