Gayle forced to miss Dominica T20s

West Indies opener Chris Gayle is being rested from the two Twenty20 internationals against New Zealand in Dominica this weekend.

There are doubts over his fitness, having had a lingering back injury recently.

Dominican fans will not see allrounder Dwayne Bravo either. He has a shoulder injury sustained in the Indian Premier League three months ago.

At least, they will see at Windor Park, Roseau, on Saturday and Sunday allrounder Kieron Pollard, who has not played internationals for a year due to a knee injury but played domestically recently in a comeback.

Lamothe is hosting what is billed to be a “spicy fundraiser” for CUSO, featuring salsa dancing, “saucy cocktails,” prizes and a silent auction. “Caliente for CUSO International” will take place at the Aura Lounge on Saturday, June 21.

TIMMINS - Sylvie Lamothe always had a dream of travelling the world.

“But I wanted to do it in a different way,” the Timmins resident explained. “I didn’t just want to be a tourist. I wanted to live within a local community ... utilizing my skills to help people and get to be part of the local culture.”

That’s what drew her to get involved with CUSO (Canadian University Service Overseas) International.

Each year, CUSO sends hundreds of volunteers to work on development projects in more than 40 countries — mostly in impoverished areas within in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

“My professional background is working in non-profits, specifically with volunteer management and fundraising,” said Lamothe, who holds a degree in business administration.

Roseau, Dominica (TDN) -- I view with some degree of trepidation the news that the government of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerritt has made a donation of $500,000 to the Roman Catholic church to assist in the restoration of the cathedral.

This is clearly a case where good news could potentially be bad news. And especially in this general election season, the appearance of the Bishop of Roseau posing with the prime minister in a prominent photo accepting the cheque, raises some very serious issues that must be addressed.

Dominica To Build International Airport with Help of China

Roseau, Jun 10 (Prensa Latina) Dominica already sees a significant progress for the financing and construction of an international airport with the help of China, said the government, according to reports of the local media. The Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, said in a statement that after a visit to the Asian giant last month, they were able to sign a document with that nation that will be revealed soon and that it explains the details of the financing reached.

He said that the government of Dominica Labour Party (DLP) has always wanted to build an international airport on the island, allowing the Caribbean country to increase its air capacity and connectivity to boost its tourism numbers, but it does not have the financial support to develop this strategy.

Roseau, Dominica (TDN) -- Singer Michele Henderson who is Dominica’s Goodwill Ambassador has won the top spot at the 2014 Caribbean Community (CARICOM) song competition with her composition entitled “Celebrating CARICOM.”

The versatile singer who has wooed audiences across the world said she was very happy and excited that her work had caught regional attention, and viewed that as a positive for Dominica. “I feel very proud that our little island Dominica can come up on top for a change, in a regional competition,” she said.
